Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Is Color Guard separate from Marching Band?
    • Center Grove Color Guard (CGCG) is a part of the CGHS Marching Band in the summer/fall.  After Marching Band season ends, CGCG begins their winter season competing on their own.  You must be in the Marching Band guard in order to participate in the World Winter Guard.
    • Audition required for the Marching Band Color Guard.
    • CGCG is a team of dedicated students that combines intricate dance, flags, rifles, and sabers into a wonderful visual production.
    • Some dance background is beneficial but not required.  We’ll work hard, learn new skills, and have fun along the way.
    • If you are interested, we encourage you to come to try-outs to see what it’s all about.  You can make a decision at the end of that week.
  • What do I need to bring to try-outs/rehearsal?
    • Wear comfortable clothes that you can move in.  Shorts and t-shirt or tank top plus tennis shoes.
    • Bring your instrument and water bottle.
  • Do I have to be in a band/guard class in order to be in Marching Band?
    • Yes, winds and percussion must participate in one of our three band classes during the school year and color guard students must be in the color guard class in order to be a member of the Marching Band.
  • What if I’m not currently signed up for a band or color guard class?
    • That’s ok.  We will provide a Marching Band roster to the counselors and they will meet with you to make any adjustments.
  • Are there practices over the breaks?
    • Yes, there are rehearsals over summer and fall break however there is also time scheduled off for vacations.  Please see the Band’s Calendar and schedule your vacations during the days when there is not a rehearsal or competition.
      • Below are time frames that the Marching Band is typically off from year to year.  (Again, please see the Band’s calendar for exact dates for the current year.)
      • Summer Break days off – June 15th through the week of July 4th
      • Fall Break days off – Sunday through Wednesday
  • What is the schedule like once school starts?
    • Marching Band begins in May and goes through mid November.  There are practices after school 2 days a week and 1 evening, plus Friday night home football games, and Saturday practices or competitions.  See the Band’s Google Calendar for a complete schedule.
  • I have a possible conflict with a summer date.  What should I do?
    • Email a director to discuss the situation.  There are times that we can help come up with a solution.
  • Are there fees associated with participating in Marching Band?
    • Yes, please view the Band Handbook on the homepage under Quick Links for details
  • I want to invite others to sign up for marching band.  What should I tell them?
    • The more the merrier!!  Share www.centergrovebands.com with them and have them contact us if they have questions!
  • Is it possible to take Honors/AP Classes or be in Early College and do Marching Band?
    • Absolutely!  We have had Valedictorians & Salutatorians as well as students who have graduated with an Associates Degree that were a part of the Marching Band.  Please see one of the directors if you need assistance in scheduling.
